Ash & Mikaela

Welcome to 2018!

I thought I would kick this year’s blog posts off with a collection of photographs that I put together late last year. I’m starting on my next underwater nude series so asked a few models to come and pose for me over a weekend to see how they hold themselves underwater.

Modeling underwater may sound easy, but the reality is a lot of time holding your breath and getting water up your nose while trying to look as elegant and feminine as possible. I love that side of photography, the behind the scenes reality of putting everything together vs. the final image that looks so subtle and graceful. I’ve created a few videos that are included in this post with some behind the scenes snippets. Let me know what else you would like to see and I will keep the videos coming.

I’ve also been testing out some new underwater lighting setups, but the results are not quite ready to share yet. A little more time in the pool and I should be getting closer. That’s the other thing that is difficult to share in a blog post, the hours of conceptualizing, designing and constructing ideas, lights, backdrops, props etc. that go into my photographs. It’s something I am aiming to share more of with you in 2018. I am also working on another ‘left field’ idea to share some of the thinking that goes into photography with you, stay tuned…

As always there are so many people to thank for helping me put this together. Ash, Mikaela, Athalia, Lyndon, Pete & Sherrie, none of this would be a reality without you, thanks!

Enjoy every day of 2018,
Joel Coleman…

When I put the call out via Facebook to ask if anyone had a pool I could use for this shoot, Pete Shaw came through with his amazing indoor / outdoor resort style home. Pete’s life philosophy is all about getting out of your comfort zone so, when we finished shooting and I jokingly said he should try modeling underwater, he didn’t hesitate, just stripped down and jumped in. Priceless laughs all round for his underwater poses!

Hi Joel, Great work – cameo is amusing – showed my wife = loves what you are doing.

Would like to see one day your creative approach to the same in Food – most of it is very boring and coffee table stuff

Thanks Pete, I’m working on the style of these shots so I can take it further in a direction that really interests me and is hopefully exciting and original for anyone interested to follow along.
