Quiet Does The Process Grow
‘Quiet Does The Process Grow’ - 2024, oil on canvas, 2030x1780mm
The printing press gave humanity the capacity to learn not only from contemporaneous generations, but also from every preceding one. This was the giant leap forward in human understanding. However, you could access all the great libraries of the world through digitized versions of every book ever written, or listen to beautifully recorded audio versions of the world’s greatest texts delivered by a synthetic computerized voice through your noise-cancelling, surround-sound headphones—and none of it would come close to the understanding you gain from sitting down with a book and reading it yourself.
The act of reading a book requires a certain discipline—an investment of time and attention. Reading allows for contemplation, reflection, and synthesis of ideas in ways that skimming or listening cannot replicate. When we engage with a book, we enter a space of thought that is uninterrupted, where ideas can unfold at their own pace, and where we have the freedom to pause, reread, and critically engage with the text. In this sense, reading is not just an activity, but a form of self-cultivation, allowing us to engage more meaningfully with the world around us.
Yes, reading is a slow and quiet process, but it is a process that grows within you.
