Seeds Are For The Birds To Spread
‘Seeds Are For The Birds To Spread’ - 2024, oil on canvas, 2030x1780mm
What we do not know is why we humans, or the universe we live in, exists. People can argue dogmatically about their beliefs in deities, the eating of forbidden fruits that contain knowledge, or whether a god who creates self-determining humans should ultimately be responsible for their poor decisions. Jokes aside, what we do know is that humanity thrives on the sharing of knowledge. Passing on not only knowledge but also the skills required to critique and analyse an idea, and to understand it from multiple perspectives, is the intergenerational inoculation against bad ideas taking hold.
I firmly believe that the tools of critical thinking—curiosity, scepticism, and reason—align to empower people with the ability to sift through vast quantities of information and find truth in the noise. However, these skills, like the skills of a carpenter or the understanding of the scientific method, need to be passed from one generation to the next—that is, they need to be taught. If, as a society, we value this kind of education, we cultivate not only knowledge but the capacity to use it responsibly.
So, leave the seeds of the forbidden fruit for the birds to spread, and instead, recognise the importance of education and inspire people to learn and think for themselves.
