When I set out to create a second drawing for this series I did not realise what I was actually doing was creating a self-portrait of sorts. It was while I was sifting through some old photographs to create the about page for this website that I realised I have literally been wearing the same clothes for decades. (read more)

I love old clothes. For me, there is rarely a reason to throw them in the recycle until they literally fall off your body. Just before a piece of clothing reaches that point, it reaches its pinnacle of goodness. This is the time in its life when it is so well worn, so well loved and has served you so well that the thought of being without it is incomprehensible. Our clothes speak more about us than we often can talk about ourselves (continue reading)

The deep ecology movement founded by Norwegian philosopher, Arne Naess, proposes that when humans discuss nature they are obliged to remember that they themselves are nature. To reject Naess’s thinking seems problematic as humans have no capacity to extricate themselves from the natural world. Essentially this means that the elements of which all humans are comprised will inevitably become the elements of another form.
Further to this, the time scales on which humanity views itself become insignificant when considered over a time frame relevant to the universe. This raises the question; will humanity’s current destructive tendencies render the stability of the Earth inadequate to continue the evolutionary process, or will humanity alter course? None who read this will know the answer to this question. We know this because we understand our own mortality. That is, we know time.

The first drawing features Duchamp coming out of his 1917 artwork ‘Fountain’. What Duchamp did was place an ordinary urinal in a gallery. This has led many to believe that what he did was recontextualise the ordinary by placing it within the confines of the gallery. I have written in the past that I think this line of thinking is false (continue reading…)

After many years as a professional photographer I began to grow frustrated with the limitations of the camera to express certain ideas. I was discussing this with an artist friend of mine towards the end of 2019. His response was to tell me it was no problem and that he would teach me to paint. To which I replied, I can’t even draw.
So I started to learn. These two drawings are 12 months apart, read about my drawing progress (here).
